Converting Lens Model Direction

Despite it being impossible to run either type of lens distortion calculation in reverse without a lengthy process, it is possible to convert a successful solve, creating a new set of coefficients for the other direction that best approximates the original. To do that:

1. Select all non-far, non-ZWT trackers

2. On the Cooordinate panel, select Set Seed.(Optionally, Peg also.)

3. Set all trackers to Lock Point.

4. On the lens control panel, change the model to the opposite type, ie matchmoving-friendly to compositing-friendly (Std.) or vice versa.

5. Clear all the calculated parameters back to zero.

6. Turn on Constrain on the Solver panel.

7. Make sure the solver mode is set to Refine.

8. Optionally, set the Lens to Known, answering Yes to copy the solved FOV to the seed FOV track.

9. Optionally, lock the camera position and orientation for the entire duration of the shot.

10. Solve. (Possibly again for good measure.)

Solves may have higher or lower hpix error before, largely at random. Marginal trackers may become particularly worse. Once a stable new solve is obtained, you can consider relaxing some of the constraints above, probably starting with turning off Constrain.

As you can see, this process is more a special occasion than something you want to have to do on every shot, especially with object tracking, complex coordinate system setups, or camera locks in place.
